Indiana Youth Group
/SAFER SPACES (Winter 2022). Creating safer spaces since 1987, the Indiana Youth Group (IYG) is the longest continually operating LGBTQ+ youth center in the nation. The organization currently serves LGBTQ+ young people ages 12-24, as well as their ally peers. General programming focuses on building self-confidence, self-expression and self-sufficiency while developing relationships within the community. Only one-in-three LGBTQ+ youth find their home to be accepting and affirming; therefore, this programming is necessary to foster positive self-image and self-worth. Because one-in-four LGBTQ+ youth is kicked out of their home after coming out, IYG also provides a wide range of vital services and resources for those experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. This includes case management, a food pantry, clothing closet, transitional apparel for trans and non-binary youth, a laundry room and shower facilities. To set up clients for lifelong success, IYG also offers an education program with open homework hours, on-site and virtual tutoring, and a homework help hotline. Educational seminars and workshops are also offered regularly and cover topics such as college prep, financial aid and vocational/trade school.
Since October 2020, IYG has also operated the largest rehousing provider in the city: Project Prism. This program assists LGBTQ+ young people experiencing homelessness to get off the streets and into their own permanent housing, which they choose. Another program, Independent Life Skills (ILS), is offered in conjunction with Project Prism to help clients foster the skills necessary to maintain their home and become self-sufficient adults. ILS also includes educational support such as high school equivalency and college application assistance, as well as workforce development to meet these goals. Without these important IYG programs, many clients would have no other avenue to escape the cycle of chronic homelessness and poverty.
IYG strives to be an inclusive, welcoming place for all regardless of gender identity, sexuality, race, ethnicity, culture or background. All services and resources are offered absolutely free of charge in order to remain accessible and remove barriers that affect so many in the LGBTQ+ community. IYG also advocates for the LGBTQ+ youth in schools, the community, and at the local, state and federal level.
